SELECTMEN’S MEETING

TOWN OF ACTON

OCTOBER 24, 2013

SALUTE TO THE FLAG

 

1.         APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Approved as written.

2.         APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF LAST MEETING: Approved as written.

3.         OLD BUSINESS:  None 

4.         NEW BUSINESS:

a.   Presentation of Boston Post Cane: Ed read a brief history of the Boston Post Cane. The cane was presented to Earl Bell, who lives on the Milton Mills Road with his daughter and husband, Joan and Dick Nass. Mr. Bell is 97 years old, with a birth date of April  1, 1917. He was also presented an inscribed gold lapel pin and a certificate.

 

b. Open Bids for Front Entrance: Only one bid was received, Earth Works Landscaping  for $12,542.62. Ted said they would table  to review the bid.

 

c. Open Bids for well: Streeter and Sons bid was $10 per foot for drilling, $12 per foot for casing and well cap donated. John Henry Swett bid $15 per foot for drilling, $12 per foot for casing and $125 for cap. Ted said they will table to review the bid.

 

d. Acton’s choice for administration and enforcement of Timber Harvesting standards: On a motion by Bill it was voted to select, “Joint enforcement and administrative duties with the Maine Forest Service subject to the standard memorandum of agreement.”

  

d. Holiday schedule: The office will be closed November 28 and 29 for Thanksgiving holiday.

 

e. Plaque Received: Selectmen received a plaque in appreciation for making the 2013 Widows Sons Maine Grand Gathering a success, Labor Day weekend.

 

f. Report on Pumpkin Carving at Mary Grant Nature Preserve: The Pumpkin Carving at the Mary Grant Nature Preserve was a big success with over 50 in attendance. All pumpkins were donated by Art Kelly’s Orchard. The different pumpkin designs were very clever and all carved and lighted pumpkins were put on display after dark. Following the carving, there was a pinata  that all the children took turns giving a whack. It took many whacks before the contents of candy spilled out.

A big thanks to the committee for  their efforts.
